In the editorial of the first issue of Literacy Today, in October 1994, National Literacy Trust director Neil McClelland explained: “The crusade for the next 10 years is to develop partnerships in order to create a society which really values literacy for the purposes of individual satisfaction, personal self development and empowerment.” In particular, he focused on the centrality of the family if we are to build a literate nation.
